PRISM

Tiny Dwelling

'Prism' is a miniature dwelling concept, this design arose during the 'Wellington Housing Crisis' project that I undertook last year, overall I was pleased with this concept, however, it wasn't the most effective solution for Wellington's ever-changing terrain. Upon reading the text '150 Best Tiny Space Ideas' by author 'Francesc Zamora Mola' I was inspired to revisit this concept and continue development.

The structure itself takes advantage of a narrow footprint and reasonable height accompanied by a sturdy steel frame with glass panelling keeps the facade rigid along the structure's northern edge. This facade takes advantage of the natural light throughout the day, utilising a concrete pad for thermal mass, capturing heat throughout the day and releasing it throughout the evening. This section of the dwelling serves as a sitting area surrounded by a concrete planter that follows the footprint of the facade. Composed above the seating are a series of the spherical lampshades positioned at varying heights to generate a point of interest from the upstairs sleeping quarters. I used large sweeping curtains made of cotton that span from the ceiling to the ground floor so that levels of light and the framing of the view itself can be changed freely.

Materials used within the dwelling are all neutral in tone so that the interior feels natural and doesn't take-away from the view that the facade frames within itself. The kitchenette, bathroom, study, seating area, storage, and sleeping quarters have all been positioned to maximise space-saving. For example, both the study space and storage and located underneath the stairwell. The sleeping quarters is placed on a platform upstairs with a surrounding railing and isn't sealed away from the rest of the dwelling space.
